11.23.12 Edition: 2 CAPS Saves Logged In Cirrus Downings In AZ, Australia Two Parachute Pulls In Five Days, All Involved Safe

The pilot of a Cirrus SR22 walked away after deploying his airplane's
parachute following what he described as a "catastrophic oil failure" last
week.

The airplane went down in a wooded area of the Sitgreaves National Forest in
Arizona, according to a report appearing on the azfamily.com website. The
pilot was identified as 61-year-old Robert A Wolff of Durango, CO. He was
transported to an area hospital for evaluation, according to authorities.

FAA records indicate that the airplane is a 2005 model registered to Durango
Development Inc of Durango, CO. The airworthiness date is listed as January
11, 2005.

Authorities said Wolff contacted the FAA using his cell phone after the
accident. Sheriff's deputies and detectives located the pilot and the
airplane a short time later. The only indication of what may have occurred
was the pilot's report of the issue with the airplane's oil system.

In New South Wales, Australia, two men escaped major injury after the Cirrus
SR22 they were aboard went down in the northwestern portion of the state.
According to a police news release, authorities were called to a paddock
about 10km (six miles) south of Gilgandra after the airplane had to make a
forced landing about 1400 local time Wednesday November 21.

Police were told the pilot experienced engine trouble and the plane's
airframe parachute was deployed. The aircraft came to rest in the paddock,
causing it "extensive" damage. Both the pilot and passenger, two men aged 41
and 28, received minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for
treatment and observation. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) was
notified of the incident.

FAA Delays UAV Testing Site Selection 'Indefinitely' Huerta Cites Safety, Privacy Concerns In Letter To UAV Caucus

The FAA has again delayed the site selection for flight testing of UAVs that
would eventually lead to their integration into the NAS. Acting
Administrator Michael Huerta sent a letter last week to the Congressional
UAV Caucus indicating that there were still safety and privacy issues to be
resolved.

The deadline for the FAA to select the six sites intended for flight testing
was December, but in the letter, which was addressed to caucus chairman Rep.
Howard McKeon (R-CA) Huerta said that establishment of the sites has been
"suspended" with no new deadline set.

The advocacy group UAS Vision reports on their website that, in the letter,
Huetra said that "Our target was to have six test sites by the end of 2012.
However, increasing the use of UAS in our airspace also raises privacy
issues, and these issues will need to be addressed as unmanned aircraft are
safely integrated."

"The FAA will complete its statutory obligations to integrate UAS into the
national airspace as quickly and efficiently as possible," the letter
continues. "However, we must fulfill those obligations in a thoughtful,
prudent manner that ensures safety, addresses privacy issues, and promotes
economic growth."

Caucus member Rep. Steve Austria (R-OH), who represents a district in which
one of the sites might be located, called the delay "unacceptable." He told
the Dayton Daily News that “The reasons they’re giving us are
the reasons they gave us four years ago.”

US Airways Flight Attendants Authorize Strike Seeking Single Contract For All Flight Attendants Following Merger With
America West

US Airways Flight Attendants, represented by the Association of Flight
Attendants-CWA (AFA), voted Tuesday for strike authorization with 94 percent
of those voting casting a ballot in favor of a labor action. Flight
attendants are calling on management to finish the US Airways/America West
merger with a single contract for all US Airways Flight Attendants. With the
strike vote AFA members said they made clear what they are willing to do to
push management to negotiate a contract that can be ratified.

"US Airways flight attendants are determined to do whatever it takes to get
our long overdue contract," stated Roger Holmin and Deborah Volpe,
presidents for AFA representing flight attendants for pre-merger US Airways
and America West, respectively. "(US Airways chairman and CEO Doug) Parker
and his team of negotiators have failed to address the issues that Flight
Attendants believe are paramount for a single contract. Seven years after
the supposed merger of America West and US Airways this management hasn't
gotten it done. That means pre-merger America West and US Airways flight
attendants still don't work together. We may not fly together, but today
we've made clear that we will walk out together if Parker pushes this to a
strike deadline."

"We don't want to strike. We want to work for a successful airline –
but the airline will never be successful when its frontline workers are
hurting. Profits are soaring but flight attendants still shoulder the
sacrifices forced through bankruptcy a decade ago as well as disparate,
industry-low pay of a first contract from 1999. It's a black eye for US
Airways and no foundation for a new marriage with American. Parker knows
exactly what needs to be done in order to reach an agreement flight
attendants can ratify. And today he also knows it could be CHAOS without
finishing what he started with our merger first. Contract now," said Holmin
and Volpe.

If US Airways management fails to reach an agreement and the parties are
released from mediation the National Mediation Board would start a 30-day
cooling-off period. If no agreement is reached during the cooling-off period
US Airways flight attendants would utilize AFA's trademarked CHAOS tactics
to strike. CHAOS stands for Create Havoc Around Our System and includes
intermittent strikes, targeted and called without warning to management or
the traveling public.

Negotiations are under the jurisdiction of the National Mediation Board. AFA
is prepared to return to negotiations with a focused proposal that meets the
primary concerns of flight attendants. The economic improvements flight
attendants expect are commensurate with their long-term contributions and
dedication to US Airways.

Air Force Plans Third Space Plane Launch Next Month X-37B Prototype Still In Search Of A Mission, Science Group Says

There has been another delay in the scheduled launch of the third X-37B
space plane mission, according to the United Launch Alliance website. The
U.S. Air Force had scheduled the launch from Cape Canaveral on November
27th, but ULA now reports that "The new planning date for the launch of an
Atlas V carrying the third X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV-3) payload for
the U.S. Air Force is Dec. 11, 2012, pending approval from the range."

And while the mission has been delayed multiple times, a group of scientists
continues to question the need for the spacecraft. According to the Union of
Concerned Scientists (UCS), the plane could carry out a range of missions,
but in each case there are better, more efficient, and more cost-effective
ways of accomplishing them. And because it is an Air Force project and its
details are classified, the plane has generated confusion, speculation and,
in some cases, concern about its actual purpose.

In April 2010, the Air Force launched the first of two prototype space
planes, which stayed in orbit for seven months. In March 2011, it launched
the second prototype, which remained in orbit for more than a year. This
launch will mark the first prototype’s return to space.

What distinguishes the space plane from other spacecraft is its ability to
return from orbit and land on a runway. This capability requires extra
structure, such as wings, landing gear and heat shielding to withstand the
rigors of re-entry, making it significantly heavier than comparable
spacecraft that are not designed to return to Earth. Because of this extra
mass, the space plane is more difficult to maneuver in space and
significantly more expensive to launch. According to a new UCS briefing
paper, other spacecraft can carry payloads into orbit, maneuver in space,
rendezvous with satellites, release multiple payloads, and return to Earth
for tens of millions of dollars less than the space plane.

“The ability to return to Earth carries a high price,” said
Laura Grego, a senior scientist with UCS’s Global Security Program, in
a news release. “Most space missions don’t require bringing a
spacecraft back to Earth, and the space plane makes no sense for them. And
if returning to Earth does make sense, spacecraft usually use parachutes,
not wings and landing gear. Compared with those, the space plane will have a
harder time carrying payloads into orbit, maneuvering in space,
rendezvousing with satellites, and releasing multiple payloads.”

The Air Force has stated that the X-37B will allow it to carry out
experiments in space over a long period of time and return them to Earth.
Thus far, however, the Air Force has not provided any cost or capability
analyses that compare the space plane with simpler spacecraft that return by
parachuting to Earth rather than landing on a runway.

Given the Air Force’s reticence in discussing the rationale behind the
space plane and the fact that it is a military program, other countries may
infer that the X-37B has a specialized military purpose. But, according to
Grego, the space plane does not make sense as a space weapon or a vehicle
for deploying space weapons.

“In a time of tightening budgets,” said Grego, “the
administration and Congress should take a close look at the X-37B program
and be figure out why they’re spending money on a program that has no
persuasive rationale.”

Lancair Evolution Delivered To South Africa Airplane Ferried To SA By Elite Pilot Service

Arnold Pistorius recently completed construction of his Lancair Evolution in
Redmond, Oregon. But getting his airplane home was more than a matter than
just jumping in and heading to his local airport. Pistorius lives in
Pretoria, South Africa.

Such a flight is not to be taken lightly, for obvious reasons. It's a long
way across a big ocean in a new airplane. According to a news release,
Pistorius chose Elite Pilot Services based in Bend, Oregon to fly his
airplane home for him. Elite Pilot Services was formed to service the
growing Evolution ownership with Test Flying, Phase 1 Flying, Training, and
Ferry services.

But even for EPS pilots Bob Jeffrey and David Robinson, a flight from
Redmond to Pretoria was an “epic” journey. Departing Redmond on
Oct. 23, 2012 with Bob Jeffrey at the controls, Evolution N122AP headed East
and South for over 13,000 miles for just under 60 flight hours. Their route
took them from Canada across the North Atlantic to Switzerland where Bob
picked up pilot David Robinson. They continued on to Spain and then south
along the east coast of Africa.

In all, there were 25 landings in 18 countries. Outside temperatures ranged
from -50c to hot, and they encountered weather conditions ranging from 140
knot tailwinds and icing to low ceilings which had to be waited out and
thunderstorms to be dodged along the way.

Arnold’s PT6-powered Lancair Evolution performed flawlessly, with zero
maintenance issues for the entire trip, which ended in Pretoria, South
Africa on Nov 16, 2012.

Three F-35Bs Delivered To The U.S. Marine Corps Aircraft Assigned To Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121

Three F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft were officially
delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps during ceremonies at Marine Corps Air
Station Yuma, AZ, Tuesday. The three jets are assigned to Marine Fighter
Attack Squadron 121 residing with the host Marine Aircraft Group 13.

"For more than 50 years, it has been our mission to support the Marine Corps
mission, and we're honored to deliver the first three F-35B STOVL aircraft
to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121," said Bob Stevens, Lockheed Martin
chairman and chief executive officer. "The F-35B is the world's only 5th
generation, supersonic, stealthy combat aircraft that can also hover, take
off and land virtually anywhere Marines are in action. Through the hard work
and dedication of the military and contractor team, the F-35B will define
the future of Marine Corps aviation."

Official welcoming ceremonies at Yuma marked the handover of the jets to the
Marines. The delivery of the first three operational-coded 5th generation
F-35B STOVL fighters marks the beginning of STOVL tactical operational
training at Air Station Yuma. These three aircraft increase the number of
STOVL aircraft delivered to the Marine Corps to 16 and bring the total
number of F-35s delivered in 2012 to 20. Currently, 13 Marine Corps STOVLs
are assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing's Marine Fighter/Attack
Training Squadron 501 at Eglin AFB, FL, supporting pilot and maintainer
training.

Three distinct variants of the F-35 5th generation fighter will replace the
A-10 and F-16 for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A-18 for the U.S. Navy, the
F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps, and a variety of
fighters for at least nine other countries.

U.S. Navy, Northrop Grumman Conducting Triton Ground Testing Team Checking Control Software, Subsystems Prior To Beginning Flight
Operations

The U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman added a second Triton unmanned aircraft
to ground testing efforts in late September – part of an initial step
in preparation for flight operations. Two Triton unmanned aircraft systems
are being used to flight test and mature the system for operational use.
Ground testing allows the team to further reduce risks associated with
control software and subsystems prior to flight.

The first Triton entered ground testing in July after production concluded
in June. "Ground testing signifies our steady progress toward conducting
Triton's first flight," said Steve Enewold, Northrop Grumman's vice
president and program manager for Triton. "Through numerous engine runs and
checks with communications systems between the aircraft and ground
controllers, we can ensure that everything is working properly before
entering taxi testing as the next step in our efforts."

Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor to the Navy's MQ-4C Triton Broad
Area Maritime Surveillance program. In 2008, the company was awarded a
systems development and demonstration contract to build two aircraft and
test them in preparation for operational missions by late 2015. The Navy's
program of record calls for 68 Tritons to be built.

Triton provides a detailed picture of surface vessels to identify threats
across vast areas of ocean and littoral areas. With its ability to fly
missions up to 24 hours, Triton complements many manned surveillance and
reconnaissance aircraft.

Florida Residents Fatally Injured In CT Accident Were Said To Be Traveling To Visit Family When The Accident Occurred

A husband and wife flying a Cherokee Arrow were fatally injured Monday when
the plane went down near Canton, CT. The couple, identified by Canton Police
as 73-year-old Donald Derocher and his 74-year-old wife Josephine, were
reportedly traveling from their home in Florida to visit family in
Connecticut when the accident occurred.

Canton Police Capt. Lawrence Terra said the couple had lived in Canton
before moving to Florida, according to a report appearing in the Connecticut
Post. The airplane was located by a state police SAR helicopter about 2230
EST Monday on a wooded ridge of Onion Mountain. The wreckage was discovered
at about 900 feet AGL.

A Danbury Municipal Airport administrator told authorities that the plane
was being tracked by radar at Bradley International Airport. Assistant
Administrator Mike Safranek said the airplane "dropped off radar" and was
reported missing. First responders reportedly had difficulty reaching the
accident site due to its remote location, tree cover, and terrain.

Onion Mountain Park where the airplane impacted terrain is several miles
south of Simsbury Airport (4B9), but it was not clear that the small,
privately-owned facility was the couple's destination.

Swedish Maritime Administration Orders Seven AW139 Helicopters Aircraft Will Be Flown In Search And Rescue Missions

The Swedish Maritime Administration has agreed to purchase seven AW139
intermediate twin helicopters. The aircraft will be equipped for Search and
Rescue (SAR) operations with the first helicopter scheduled to be delivered
in the spring of 2013 and the final one in 2014. The Swedish Maritime
Administration is the authority responsible for Maritime and Aeronautical
Search and Rescue Services in Sweden and will operate the AW139 helicopters
from 5 bases across the country.

This order continues the success of the AW139 in the European SAR market
where its long range and all-weather operational capability are key
advantages. The AW139 is also widely used in Northern Europe for passenger
transportation to offshore oil and gas installations.

The AW139 will cruise at up to 165 knots with a range in excess of 500 nm
and superior hover performance. With its power reserve, the AW139 delivers
Category “A” (Class 1) performance from a helipad (elevated or
at ground level) at maximum take-off weight which also makes it a safe
helicopter whilst performing demanding SAR missions. The Swedish Maritime
Administration’s AW139s will also be equipped with the unique Full Ice
Protection System (FIPS) allowing flights into known icing conditions and
enabling all weather operations.

The large cabin gives the helicopter the flexibility to support cabin FLIR
station operation, medical treatment and casualty evacuation requirements.
An additional baggage compartment space that is accessible from inside or
outside the helicopter and allows SAR equipment to be stowed, keeping the
main cabin clear.

AgustaWestland says the AW139’s design is optimized for easy and rapid
maintenance with reduced number of parts, easy access to critical systems,
extended component lifecycle, exclusive HUMS (Health and Usage Monitoring
System) as well as comprehensive training services also including advanced
Level D Full Flight Simulators.

Perdue Aviation Offering Aviation Safety Events Webinars And In-Person Lectures Help Pilots Identify And Mitigate Risk

Southwest Tennessee CFI David Perdue Jr. has a couple of events on the
calendar for the week after Thanksgiving.

One is a condensed, interactive seminar (live webinar) based on the Human
Factors course that were taught to Fortune 500 companies for several years.
Perdue says the webinar is appropriate for all pilots and all experience
levels to help 'Fly Safer – Live Longer' which also happens to be the
title of his program. The focus of the webinar is on identifying &
mitigating risk.

In an e-mail to ANN, Perdue said "I use real world experience and practical
tips and gloss over the academic aspect like the FAA and many others
promote."

On the website, Perdue says that those who participate in the webinar will
come away with a significant increase in their ability to identify Risk
factors, as well as a better understanding of how to control risk. Other
benefits include improved situational awareness (SA), better airmanship
skills and decision-making while flying, and the knowledge to help them
better determine the levels of risk, all with a goal of improving safety.

The webinar will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2012 1900-2100 CST and costs
$49.00. The November 29 seminar "Avoiding Loss of Control - Aviation Risk,

Instrument Delivered For NASA's Upcoming Mars Mission Remote Sensing Package Will Study Why Mars Largely Lost Its Atmosphere

A remote sensing instrument that will peer into the ultraviolet to offer
clues to how Mars might have lost its atmosphere has arrived at Lockheed
Martin for integration into NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN
(MAVEN) spacecraft.

"The Remote Sensing package team built a system (pictured in NASA image)
that meets all technical requirements and delivered it on schedule and on
budget," said David Mitchell, MAVEN project manager from NASA’s
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. "I look forward to the
instrument’s next level of integration onto the spacecraft and
ultimately the science it will provide.”

The Remote Sensing package consists of an Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph
(IUVS) and its control electronics box, the Remote Sensing Data Processing
Unit (RSDPU). The Remote Sensing package was conceived, designed and built
by the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space
Physics (CU/LASP) at Boulder, under contract to NASA Goddard. The Imaging
UltraViolet Spectrograph collects the light and spreads it out into spectra
and records the spectra using imaging detectors. IUVS is the eyes of the
instrument. The Remote Sensing Data Processing Unit is the main electronics
box that controls IUVS and communicates with the spacecraft. RSDPU receives
and executes the commands sent to tell IUVS when and where to look. RSDPU is
the brain of the instrument.

"The IUVS performs 'remote sensing,' meaning we can study the planet and its
atmosphere at a distance through the light it emits," said Nick Schneider,
IUVS lead scientist from CU/LASP. "Ultraviolet light is especially
diagnostic of the state of the atmosphere, so our instrument provides the
global context of the whole atmosphere for the local measurements made by
the rest of the payload."

The Remote Sensing package will be turned on for its initial checkout 21
days after launch. Later in the cruise phase of the mission from Earth to
Mars, the package will be powered on twice more for state-of-health checks
and in-flight calibration. "With the delivery of this package, we are
shifting from assembling the basic spacecraft to focusing on getting the
science instruments onto the spacecraft," said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN
principal investigator from CU/LASP. "This is a major step toward getting us
to launch and then getting the science return from the mission."

Launching late next year, MAVEN will be the first mission devoted to
understanding the Martian upper atmosphere. The goal of MAVEN is to
determine the history of the loss of atmospheric gases to space through
time, providing answers about Mars climate evolution. By measuring the
current rate of escape to space and gathering enough information about the
relevant processes, scientists will be able to infer how the planet’s
atmosphere evolved in time.

The MAVEN spacecraft will carry two other instrument suites. The Particles
and Fields Package, built by the University of California at Berkeley Space
Science Laboratory with support from University of Colorado at Boulder's
Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (CU/LASP) and NASA Goddard,
contains six instruments that will characterize the solar wind and the
ionosphere of the planet. The Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer,
provided by NASA Goddard, will measure the composition and isotopes of
neutral ions. "Three of the big milestones in an instrument builder's life
are the day you get selected to fly on a mission, the day you deliver the
instrument to the spacecraft to get ready for launch, and the day that it
gets where it's going and data starts flowing back from space," said Mark
Lankton, Remote Sensing package program manager from CU/LASP. "The Remote
Sensing team is really happy to have gotten to the second milestone, and we
can hardly wait to reach the third."

Helicopter Pilot Rescued By His Brother In A Kayak Aircraft Went Down In The Water Near A Fishing Camp In Ottawa, Canada

The pilot of a helicopter arriving at his brother's fishing camp about 50
miles northwest of Ottawa, Canada found himself in the cold water of a lake
when the aircraft went down for unknown reasons Sunday. Fortunately, his
brother was watching, hoping to photograph the landing, and paddled out in
his kayak to rescue the pilot.

The pilot was identified as Bruno Piche of Laval, Quebec. The camp is owned
by his brother, Richard, who said Bruno was able to free himself from the
sinking aircraft about a mile from shore. Richard got his brother aboard the
kayak and paddled to shore, where Bruno was transported to a local hospital.

The pilot suffered only minor injuries, according to a report appearing in
the Edmonton Sun. Richard told first responders from the Sûreté
du Québec that his brother had said "the sun blinded him."

Aviation accidents in Canada are investigated by the Canadian Transportation
Safety Board. It also investigates occurrences anywhere in the world that
involved an aircraft in respect of which or that was operated by a person to
whom a Canadian aviation document had been issued under Part I of the

NASA Scientists Find Similarities In Formation Of Mars And Earth But Their Evolution Has Been Very Different

A team of NASA scientists and their colleagues have found evidence from
meteorites that Mars and Earth had a similar origin, but then the two
planets evolved quite differently. Based on their analyses of two Martian
meteorites, researchers in the Astromaterials Research and Exploration
Science Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center have concluded that water
in the Martian interior originated from planetary building blocks similar to
those that formed Earth. This finding implies that chondritic meteorites
containing small, granular minerals -- not comets -- are the source of water
for terrestrial planets. The team’s findings are reported in the
journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Researchers also found that, unlike on Earth, rocks on Mars that contain
atmospheric volatiles such as water were not recycled deep into the
planet’s interior. If that had been the case, the primordial water the
researchers found would have been overprinted by recycled water from Mars'
atmosphere. Debates in the scientific community focus on how the interior
and crust of Mars formed and how they differ from those of Earth. To
investigate the history of Martian water and other volatiles, scientists at
JSC, the Carnegie Institution in Washington, and the Lunar and Planetary
Institute in Houston compared water concentrations and hydrogen isotopes
trapped in crystals within the meteorites. Both were of the same primitive
nature, but one was relatively rich in elements such as hydrogen, while the
other wasn't.

“There are competing theories that account for the diverse
compositions of Martian meteorites,” said Tomohiro Usui of Tokyo,
Japan, lead author of the paper and a former NASA/LPI postdoctoral fellow
who led the research. “Until this study there was no direct evidence
that primitive Martian lavas contained material from the surface of
Mars.”

"Usui revealed that the initial hydrogen isotopic composition of Mars was
Earth-like, because he designed an experiment that greatly reduced
contamination to the meteorite here on Earth,” said coauthor Justin
Simon, a JSC cosmochemist.

Much controversy surrounds the origin, abundance and history of water on
Mars. The sculpted channels of the Martian southern hemisphere speak loudly
of flowing water, but that terrain is ancient. Consequently, planetary
scientists often describe early Mars as “warm and wet” and
current Mars as “cold and dry.” One meteorite appears to have
changed little on its way to the surface of Mars from the Martian mantle. It
has a hydrogen isotopic composition similar to that of Earth. The other
meteorite appears to have incorporated some Martian crust that had contact
with the Martian atmosphere. Thus the meteorites represent two very
different sources of water. One sampled water from the deep interior and
represents the water that existed when Mars formed as a planet, while the
other sampled the shallow crust and atmosphere. “These meteorites
contain trapped basaltic liquids, not unlike the basalts that erupt on
Hawaii," said coauthor John Jones, a JSC experimental petrologist and
member of the Mars Science Laboratory rover team. "They are pristine samples
that have sampled various Martian volatile element environments.”

From this, the team inferred that Martian surface water has had a different
geologic history than Martian interior water. Most likely, atmospheric water
has preferentially lost the lighter hydrogen to space and retained the
heavier hydrogen isotope (deuterium).

That the enriched meteorite has incorporated crustal and atmospheric water
could help solve an important mystery. Are Martian meteorites with
components such as water coming from an enriched, deep mantle or have they
been affected by interaction with the Martian crust? The hydrogen isotopic
composition indicates the latter, so this meteorite tells scientists more
about the Martian crust than about the Martian mantle. The other meteorite,
however, yields more information about the Martian mantle, or interior.

The concentrations of water in the meteorites also are different. One has a
low concentration that infers Mars' interior is dry. But the enriched
meteorite has 10 times more water, suggesting the surface could have been
very wet at one time. This could help scientists as they try to better
understand the geologic history of Mars.

'Total Airport Security Solution' Field Trial Underway At Heathrow Airport Multi-Level Video And Situation Intelligence Solution Designed To Create
Integrated Airport Security Monitoring Platform

The first Total Airport Security Solution (TASS) proof-of-concept is being
conducted at Heathrow in London. TASS is comprised of a multi-level video
and situation intelligence offering specifically designed to help airports
advance their threat detection capabilities.

Verint, the TASS consortium initiator and coordinator, along with several
key partners from leading European technology companies, launched the field
testing of the TASS prototype in October 2012. During the trial, three
pre-identified security threat scenarios are being tested, allowing members
within the airport community to observe and evaluate the TASS system.

Part of the Seventh EU Framework Program (FP7), TASS is a four year project
that is expected to run until March 2014. The TASS consortium is led by
Verint and composed of 20 leading European technology companies, research
institutes and end-user organizations. The purpose of TASS is to enable an
advanced, integrated approach to airport security by creating an entire
airport situation intelligence solution that provides real-time, accurate
situational awareness to airport authorities. Based on integrating and
fusing different types of real-time sensors and sub-systems for data
collection, TASS operates in a variety of modes, including fixed and mobile,
and under any environmental condition. TASS represents a significant step
forward in developing the model for integrated systems at airports, which
typically have a range of systems and sensors not natively designed to
interoperate or share intelligence in a coordinated manner.

Heathrow security officials will continue to conduct several simulated
scenarios testing the system’s functionality and interoperability with
the integrated technologies. Among the technology being used in the field
trial are Verint’s Nextiva Video Management Software (VMS) and Nextiva
PSIM, a physical security information management solution. The Verint VMS
solution is a powerful video management application designed to view video,
monitor system health and export information for investigative purposes.
Nextiva PSIM captures information from a variety of security, safety and
building management systems; enables users to view, correlate and analyze
the information to identify situations quickly and efficiently; and helps
initiate and manage responses to security situations in collaboration with
local authorities and agencies. The Nextiva solutions are open-standards
based and have been integrated with the other consortium key partner
technologies.

“The TASS consortium is pleased to execute and monitor its first
proof-of-concept testing at Heathrow,” says Gideon Hazzani, TASS
project coordinator and director of business development, Verint
Communications and Cyber Intelligence Solutions. “Heathrow’s
sophisticated environment made it an attractive candidate for the trial.
Upon integrating the various systems, the consortium will continue its field
trial to validate the Total Airport Security Solution’s ability to
deliver real-time data to security authorities, enabling them to quickly
identify and assess situations, and effectively respond to alerts within
pre-defined parameters set forth by the airport.”

LAX Workers In Dispute With Union Organizers Employees Offer To Hold A Vote On Union Membership 'Anytime'

A group representing the 450 workers of Aviation Safeguards – a
contractor providing wheelchair, skycap, baggage handling and ticket
verification for airlines at LAX – which left the Service Employees
International Union (SEIU) a year ago, held a news conference Wednesday to
inform travelers at LAX that they were not responsible for any travel
disruptions caused by a union protest.

The employees called on the union leadership to back down from its threat to
disrupt holiday travel on the busiest travel day of the year.

The employees allege that the union brought in outsiders who don't work at
LAX to be part of a protest along Century Boulevard that could impact the
ability of travelers to get to the airport. "We petitioned to leave the SEIU
almost a year ago, and the contract ended. And now they're bringing in
outsiders to block travelers who are just trying to get home for the
holidays," said Frederick McNeil. "It's ridiculous. People need to
understand that SEIU doesn't speak for the employees at Aviation
Safeguards."

Recent media reports wrongly suggested that employees would be "walking off
the job" on Wednesday. "That couldn't be further from the truth," said
Andres Cazares, an Aviation Safeguards employee since 1993. "We have no beef
with the company or the airport. Our beef is with the union. Most of the
protesters (were) not even ... LAX workers. They don't work here and they
don't know our company. The employees of Aviation Safeguards are planning to
work, and we are extremely confident that our colleagues will be there for
every shift."

Dissatisfied with the SEIU's representation, a majority of the company's
employees signed petitions in December 2011 to leave the union. "We voted to
cancel our agreement with SEIU because they took our money and did nothing
for us," said Edgar Rivas, a security guard who has worked for Aviation
Safeguards since 2006. "Now we earn more money, and have more health care
options. Honestly, we're so glad to be free of SEIU."

SEIU officials questioned the validity of the employees' petition to
decertify the union, even though union officials reviewed the petitions and
never challenged them. The petitions were also reviewed by City officials.
"We're happy to hold another election as long as it's independently run,"
said Chris Colmenares. "People need to know – and that includes all
the politicians in City Hall – that the SEIU won't agree to an
election because they know the outcome will not be favorable to them. We
just wish the SEIU would leave us alone and let us do our job at the
airport."

That sentiment is supported by senior management at the company. "Our
employees are free to rejoin SEIU at any time," said Regional Vice President
Joe Conlon. "We respect our employees' right to choose representation and
would not stand in the way of a vote."

SEIU has had a troubled track record at LAX in recent years. Another
contractor, Calop Aeroground Services, decertified the SEIU in 2010. A
federal judge rejected SEIU's challenge to the decertification process.
"Several more contracts, with other companies, are due to expire on November
30," said Ashley Atkinson, a dispatcher at Aviation Safeguards. "Wednesday's
planned demonstration is designed to pressure contractors at LAX to sign
SEIU agreements instead of letting workers choose. That's not democracy.
It's the same old bullying."

Atkinson points out that employees at Aviation Safeguards immediately
started taking home significantly more pay after the departure of SEIU.
Collectively, it is estimated the employees will take home more than $2
million more a year in wages than they did while being represented by the
union. As a result, the company will also pay $300,000 more per year in
state and federal payroll taxes.

"It's really outrageous that the SEIU says things that just aren't true,"
said Sherly Varela, a screener at Aviation Safeguards since 2008. "They say
that our company doesn't comply with the City's Living Wage Ordinance even
though the documentation is there to prove them wrong. The union just didn't
pay any attention to us." Employees at Aviation Safeguards want to assure
the public that operations at the terminals where they work will be fully
staffed if the protest proceeds. According to Jennifer Garcia, "We just wish
the union and all the other outsiders would leave us alone, leave the
travelers alone, and let us do our work."

Deadline for Alaska Airlines' 'Paint the Plane' Contest Approaching Just A Few Days Left For Hawaii Students To Submit Artwork That May Adorn A
737-800 Aircraft

School-aged children in Hawaii have just a few more days to submit their
artwork for Alaska Airlines' statewide "Paint the Plane" contest. The
contest is a partnership between the airline, Hawaii State Department of
Education and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, and encourages
students to create artwork honoring the unique culture of the Aloha State.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade from public, private and home
schools across the state have until Nov. 30 to submit designs that best
capture the "Spirit of the Islands." A final selection panel comprised of 10
judges representing Hawaii's government, community, arts, education and
tourism leaders will select three top designs. Residents of Hawaii will then
vote on the top three designs and provide Alaska Airlines with their
recommendation in an online public vote slated for Dec. 11-18.

"We've seen many creative and colorful submissions from students across
Hawaii and encourage any student from public, private and home schools to
submit their best artwork," said Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines' vice
president of marketing. "This is an opportunity for a budding young artist
to showcase the 'Spirit of the Islands' to travelers across the
country—and the deadline is next week."

"What a great way for Alaska Airlines to celebrate five years of serving the
Hawaiian Islands," said Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawaii
Tourism Authority and one of the contest judges. "This is truly a unique
opportunity for our young people and will allow Hawaii to share our aloha
spirit on a flying mural across North America. I hope that students from all
grade levels on every island will submit their best designs and I look
forward to seeing what our talented keiki come up with!"

"Spirit of the Islands" contest schedule:

1) Nov. 30 – Entry forms must be postmarked and mailed to the
designated Alaska Airlines P.O. box in Honolulu.

Turkish Airlines Orders GE90-Powered Boeing 777-300ER Aircraft Signs OnPoint Maintenance Agreement For New Engines

Turkish Airlines (THY) has ordered 15 GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777-300ER
aircraft with options for five additional aircraft. Delivery will begin in
2014. THY has also signed a long-term OnPoint solutions agreement for the
maintenance, repair and overhaul of its new GE90-115B engines. The total
engine order and OnPoint solution agreement is valued at more than $1.4
billion.

"The GE90 engine has a strong reputation for outstanding performance and
reliability, and this reputation helped us select the engine-aircraft
combination as we look to expand our fleet," said Temel Kotil, Turkish
Airlines' CEO.

At 115,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-115B engine includes such
performance-enhancing features as three-dimensional aerodynamic (3-D aero)
compressor and wide-chord, swept composite fan blades for greater
efficiency. The dual annular combustor emits no more than 40 percent of the
hydrocarbons allowed by today's international standards. In addition,
today’s GE90-115B engines have been enhanced to reduce fuel burn by 36
percent from the 2000 launch specifications.

More than 1,500 GE90-115B engines have been ordered by customers for their
Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200LRs and 777 Freighters. In 2011, the GE90 engine
experienced its most successful year and accumulated airline and freighter
operator commitments for 400 engines. This surpassed the 2007 record of 250
engine commitments in a year.

Snecma of France, Avio SpA of Italy and IHI Corporation of Japan are
revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program.

FAA Approves Life Extensions For Bell 206 Airwolf Tension-Torsion Straps Operators Can Fly Up To A Year Longer Before Replacement Is Required

The FAA has approved a life extension to 36-months/1,200 hours for Airwolf
Aerospace's Tension-Torsion (TT) straps for Bell 206 helicopters. TT straps
for the Bell 206 Jet Ranger, 206L Long Ranger and OH-58 helicopters,
previously had a 24-month/1,200-hour life limit.

Airwolf Aerospace technical director, John Montana, said, “The
extension of the calendar life of our TT Straps is the next phase in our
development of this innovative product. We’ve had an incredible
response so far from customers who purchased our original straps, which were
launched in March 2011. We expect to serve even more Bell 206/206L operators
with our 36-month TT Straps. “We worked over seven years to bring our
original product to the market, and now customers have an even more
affordable, FAA/PMA alternative, STC’d for their Bell 206
helicopters.”

Airwolf manufactures its straps under its FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval
(PMA). The straps are STC’d by FAA, EASA, ANAC, and TCCA.

Using its proprietary manufacturing processes, and extensive testing,
Airwolf was able to prove to the FAA that its straps should have their life
limit increased by 50% to 36 months. The result was the approval of the 50
percent life increase.

“The OEM has been talking about a life extension for the last 20
years, but never brought anything to the market," Montana said. "At Airwolf
we don’t just talk about reducing direct operating costs, we actually
do it. Our TT straps are just the first of many new PMA parts in development
for Bell 206 series helicopters. We are very upfront about the fact that the
more operators support us through buying our TT Straps, the more new parts
they will see in the future. For years the only ‘option’ was to
live with the burden and costs of the short calendar life TT straps. Now,
there’s an even more affordable, proven and FAA-approved
alternative.”

The straps are approved for all Jet Rangers, Long Rangers, and OH 58s.

New Zealand Health Board Swaps Air Ambulance Providers Regulations On Single Engine Helos Factor Into The Decision

New Zealand's MidCentral Health has awarded its air ambulance services
contract for patient transfers to HeliPro. The contract had previously been
held by Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter operated by Philips Search and
Rescue Trust.

In a news release, MidCentral Health Hospital Services operations director
Lyn Horgan said: “To ensure improved efficiency, patient and staff
safety and the availability of quality helicopters and fix wing aircraft and
equipment, MidCentral chose to go to the market, requesting proposals from
organizations with extensive experience in commercial and patient transfer
service sector.

“There were two strong contenders for the contract which was decided
by a panel of experts including clinicians. The decision to award the air
ambulance patient transfers contract to HeliPro was a combination of many
factors including: equipment, service, and reducing the time taken for
patients going by road transport to waiting air services.”

HeliPro will be responsible for the transfer of patients from Palmerston
North Hospital to other hospitals.

New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority regulations which prevent single engine
helicopters from flying over populated areas except in an emergency were
also cited as a factor in the decision. Palerston North Rescue Helicopters
flies single engine aircraft, which meant that, in most cases, an ambulance
was required to transport patients to the company's base in Milson, where
they were loaded onto the aircraft.

Helipro, by contrast, operates two BK117 twin engine helicopters. Those
aircraft can land at the hospital at any time, not just in the case of an
emergency.

An official for Philips Search and Rescue Trust, which operates Palmerston
North Rescue Helicopters, told the New Zealand newspaper The Dominion Post
that while disappointing, the move would not affect the company's ability to
respond to emergencies such as highway and farm accidents in the central and
lower portions of North Island. The new contract will become effective at
the first of the year.

Pigeon Hunters Take Down Animal Rights UAV Group Has Been Campaigning Against The PA Hunting Club

An animal rights group with a beef against the Wing Pointe hunting club in
Berks County, PA, has been flying an octocopter UAV over the club's
property, using a video camera mounted on the aircraft to record the club's
pigeon shoots.

On Sunday, the aircraft, which belongs to a group calling its self "SHARK"
... for SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness ... was fired on and hit,
causing about $4,000 damage to the aircraft by the group's estimate. It was
not certain that a hunter at the club was responsible for shooting at the
drone.

According to television station WCAU, the group sent out a news release
Monday indicating that "a single sharp rifle crack rang out," causing the
video feed to end and the aircraft to go out of control. It was eventually
landed and recovered by the group.

The incident is being investigated by local police. The group says it is the
fourth time the drone has been targeted while they try to take video of the
shoots, which the group claims are inhumane.

However, the Berks County District Attorney told the station that the pigeon
shoots are legal. He said he is looking for a way to end the conflict
between the two groups which he says is "potentially deadly."

ANN FAQ: Contributing To Aero-TV How To Get A Story On Aero-TV News/Feature
Programming
How do I submit a story idea or lead to Aero-TV?

If you would like to submit a story idea or lead, please contact
Jim Campbell via the link below. Please include the following
information when submitting a story idea or lead: who the intended
subject is, a general story outline of said subject, important
dates or deadlines for the story lead, and any appropriate contact
information for both yourself and related subjects.
What kind of content is welcome?

The Aero-TV crew is always enthusiastic about new ideas and
leads that are provided by our viewers. It is our aim to provide
aviation coverage that our viewers find important, relevant, and
meaningful to the industry. If you believe that you have such a
story, please do not hesitate to contact us; however, please bear
in mind that some stories are better suited for our print
department rather than our video department.
What is Aero-TV looking for when reviewing story
submissions?

When reviewing story submissions, our production crew is looking
for three main elements: does the feature idea provide interesting
visual elements, is it newsworthy, or does it share a compelling
story? When we use the term “visually interesting,” we
are referring to our ability, as a video production crew, to
document the story in a dynamic way.

For example, if you have a lead story on new aircraft being
developed, access would be an extremely relevant consideration:
will we be able to show imagery of the new aircraft? Will we have
access to the location where the aircraft is being developed and
built? Will we be able to either shoot or obtain footage of the
aircraft in flight? Such questions help us determine whether we
will be able to provide our viewers with visual representations of
the presented story.

Finally, the Aero-TV crew remains committed to our quest of
sharing the heart of aviation with our viewers. We are looking for
stories that demonstrate this passion and commitment both for the
field of aviation, as well as its impact on the community at
large.

No story is considered “small” in our eyes; if an
aviator or an aviation-related story has touched you, we want to
hear about it. These are the elements that make up this great
industry and we want to share them with our viewers.

ANN's Daily Aero-Linx (11.23.12) Aero-Linx!

Scouring the information super airways can sometimes be a tough, if
educational, task for the Aero-News staff... but it also allows us to check
out some truly neat and exciting sites, so it's not that bad a gig. On any
given day, we may check dozens (and often hundreds) of different sources for
story ideas, and facts confirmation. And, as is the nature of our business,
much of this is done on the Internet.

The ANN gang decided we probably shouldn't keep some of the neat sites, info
resources, and organizations we've discovered to ourselves... so we decided
to bring you Aero-Linx. These are the sites that WE check out -- when we
need added perspective, a new spin on a day's topic... or just want to
escape into cyber-aero-space for awhile.

Look for some of our favorite sites, coming each day to ANN via Aero-Linx.
Suggestions for future Aero-Linx segments are always welcome, as well.

Face of Defense: Marines Enjoy Thanksgiving Feast, Camaraderie

By Marine Corps Cpl. Timothy Lenzo

FORWARD OPERATING BASE GERONIMO, Afghanistan, Nov. 23, 2012 - Marines with 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7 were in the holiday spirit this Thanksgiving.

(Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.
Thousands of miles from their loved ones, the Marines traded gathering with their friends and families for spending time with their brothers and sisters in arms.

"It's hard for Marines to be away from home this time of year," said Sgt. Corey Branner, logistics and supply chief with the battalion.

For Thanksgiving, the dining facility at Forward Operating Base Geronimo served a special menu for the Marines. They ate turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and pumpkin pie. All their holiday favorites were available. It was a welcome boost of morale at a time when many Marines miss their families the most.

"It's nice having a Thanksgiving Day meal rather than a [Meal, Ready-to-Eat]," said Branner, who hails from Chicago. "It helps the mindset of being away from home. A lot of these guys make groups of close friends in the Marine Corps, and today we are able to talk about more than Afghanistan, FOB Geronimo and work."

Marines often refer to one another as brothers and sisters, and for deployed Marines during the holidays, that saying holds true.

"They realize we are also their family," said Cpl. Justin Burns, warehouse noncommissioned officer with the battalion. "They turn to their brother to the left and right of them and say, 'You are my family, let's go eat dinner.'"

With the familiar Thanksgiving Day smells of turkey and gravy wafting through the air, the Marines joked and shared stories. With the television playing sports in the background, it gave some Marines a familiar aura while deployed to another country.

"I believe being away from their family for the holidays gives the Marines something to bond over," said Cpl. James Smoak, warehouse chief with the battalion. "No one wants to be away from their family, but I look forward to the camaraderie and spending time with my fellow Marines."

This is Smoak's fourth deployment and each deployment was during the holiday season. He is accustomed to not being home for Thanksgiving and said his family supports him.

"My family understands this is my job," said Smoak, from Icard, N.C. "This is what I do, and this is the profession that I chose."

Unlike Smoak, many of the Marines are on their first deployment to Afghanistan, and first away from their families and friends.

"We have a young battalion and some good senior leadership," Branner said. "I think the first time being away from home will be a humbling experience for them."

The new Marines had a welcome surprise when they arrived at the mess hall. The decorations and Thanksgiving Day menu helped boost morale.

"I don't think a lot of guys expected the mess hall to be decorated," said Burns, who hails from Fort Worth, Texas. "They had banners, cutouts and Happy Thanksgiving signs everywhere. It was really set up nice. They did a really great job for us."

The meal meant more to the new Marines than a different menu. In a country where holidays are still workdays, the pumpkin pie, turkey and camaraderie helped bring the Marines with 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, closer together as a family.

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 23, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader in Afghanistan's Kandahar province yesterday, military officials reported.

The arrested Taliban leader coordinated improvised explosive device emplacements and ambushes against Afghan and coalition forces, officials said.
