The Yale-China Nonprofit Internship Program and Community Service Exchange offers partially funded internships for Yale students at nonprofit organizations in Hong Kong. The Nonprofit Internship Program provides seven-week internship placements at nonprofit organizations in Hong Kong. Focus areas include migrant rights, children's health, women's empowerment, community organization, and legal advocacy for foreign domestic helpers. After their internships have been completed, Nonprofit Interns work with mainland Chinese students on a weeklong service project. All interns receive a stipend to offset the cost of airfare and living expenses, as well as visa support and paid housing. The Community Service Exchange pairs three Yale students with three students from New Asia College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The pairs spend one month interning at nonprofit organizations in New Haven and then travel together to Hong Kong for a second month interning at similar organizations. Focus areas include HIV/AIDS care, mental health, and education. Community Service Exchange interns receive paid international airfare and housing, a stipend to offset living expenses, and local transportation. Applications and Eligibility All Yale undergraduates, including freshmen and graduating seniors, are eligible to apply. No Chinese language skills or specific majors are required for most placements. [Chinese Arts Festival - e-card.jpg]<http://www.yalechina.org/snake> The Council on East Asian Studies is once again sponsoring a public Chinese language and culture exposure course at the New Haven Free Public Library (NHFPL). The course will run once a week in the evenings on Mondays (6:00 - 7:30 PM) for 12 weeks from March 4 - May 20, 2013 (see attached flyer). Exploring Chinese Culture and Language will be taught by Ms. Zhao Fang, from Taiyuan, China, who is a Mandarin Chinese language instructor and tutor in the area. Classes will be held at the downtown branch of the Library, 133 Elm Street, on Monday evenings each week from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM through May 20, 2013 (12 total weeks). In each class, Ms. Zhao will not only provide instruction on basic Mandarin Chinese vocabulary and phrases, but she will also include cultural content. Topics to be covered include greetings; vocabulary for eating, shopping, traveling & making phone calls; and traditional Chinese customs and celebrations, etc. Classes are designed for individuals aged 16 and over who are planning to travel or do business in China, as well as those who just want to learn Mandarin Chinese and more about China and its culture. We are looking for some energetic volunteers of different backgrounds who might be interested going once or twice to help run practice drills in Mandarin Chinese with the NHFPL students. The class will be no larger than 20 people. We are not looking for one person to attend all 12 sessions, but rather, perhaps a handful of students who might be interested in coordinating with the instructor to help run practice drills with the NHFPL students once or twice during the run of the course. We think it is important for this community group to see people of all backgrounds who can speak standard, Mandarin Chinese.
